This is an extremely nice short introduction to why every AI computation guy should have at least one intro and one advanced course in this field of linguistics. Natural language is a window on how the brain or any neural system computes. It is perhaps the clearest empirical scientific window we have.

That said, linguists argue about things without an understanding of how their observations may be computed by machine and thus understood rigorously in a mathematical sense.

But through natural spoken language we can see both if we admit both into our science, engineering, and education toolset.

Here is the fundamental symmetry in neural computation that gives our brains what to talk about. And, vice versa: our talk that gives gives our brains their computation.
