Sorry, I did forget that. Your correction is appreciated. I do recall it came out of The Netherlands originally now. I long forgot this important fact but can't remember why...I'm thinking it was because the CNRI releases were called "Python".
It was "Python" though.
Just checked. Kahn hired the Dutch guy Guido van Rossum who had created the first versions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Python_License, and Kahn brought considerable manpower resources to making it commercially viable. I think, indeed I am sure, the guys at CNRI 'hated' Java. As they (at CNRI) once famously wrote in a special place, "Python is a high level programming language, unlike Java."
Lisp people like me appreciated that but thought that Python was still a low level language.
