Certainly a book you should read (or audible) is the short book by Sabine Hossenfelder, "Lost in Math". I just encountered it in the last two weeks and am audibling it twice and bought the kindle because it is so good on exactly this topic.

She is an established particle physicist who also admits that physicists are lying all the time in exactly the ways I have been describing. But she does a great job of making concrete informed and positive suggestions on what needs to be done.

You and I are not alone. (That said, when she steps out of her area of expertise -- into my ground -- she also sadly, and I am somewhat sure, unintentionally, lies.)
